WHAT IS IT?
Swedish Body Massage is the use of the hands to manipulate the soft tissue of the body. Techniques used were strongly influenced by Per Henrik Ling a Swedish Remedial Gymnast. He developed a range of techniques such as effleurage, petrissage, vibration, friction, rolling and slapping. All of which form part of a Swedish massage. It is so popular that many other types of massage derive from Swedish massage and its' techniques. Due to the variety of strokes used in Swedish massage, treatments tend to be very varied, and can range from being very light and superficial to something deeper.
How does it work?
Massage has a great many benefits on all levels-physical, mental and emotional. Circulation is stimulated aiding I the decongestion of tissue by reducing blood viscosity and tissue pressure. Once this occurs, there is an increase in the ability of nutrients and oxygen to diffuse into tissues to supply the cells. Venous and lymphatic return is improved increasing removal of waste products from the tissues.
These techniques can reduce mirco spasm in muscle fibres and separate fibres that have become adhered together allowing greater movement and releasing pressure on trapped capillaries and nerve endings. Aches and pains can be combated, range of movement can be improved, and a general feeling of relaxation aids the whole healing process.
How will I feel after a Swedish Massage?
Most people feel relaxed, free from aches and pains and on top of the world! As massage improves lymphatic drainage, toxins are released from the body, so you may find the need to use the toilet that little bit more. Therefore, keeping hydrated is extremely important. Occasionally, body temperature can drop, and it is common to feel a little cold.
What do I do after a treatment?
After a Swedish massage you will probably be feeling very relaxed. It is advised to make the most of this state, and to make sure you don't have much planned for afterwards. Try to drink lots of water, as you will feel slightly dehydrated. Try to avoid caffeinated drinks, alcohol and cigarettes for at least 24 hours after. Also try to avoid processed foods too.
How many treatments do I need?
This depends on the severity of your condition. Swedish massage can be very gentle and performed purely for relaxation or it can be more targeted to ease aching limbs and restore a greater range of movement. Weekly treatments can be beneficial for more acute conditions, otherwise a treatment once fortnightly/monthly to aid with relaxation, promote a greater sense of health and well being is sufficient.
