WHAT IS IT?
Homoeopathy is a system of medicine which is based on treating the individual with highly diluted substances given in powder or tablet form, which trigger the body’s natural system of healing. A Homoeopath will match the most appropriate medicine to the patient according to the individual’s symptoms. The medicines are safe, natural and very effective. They have been tried and tested for well over 200 years.
The medicines are palatable and without harmful side effects. They can also be used safely in conjunction with conventional medicines.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
It works on the principle of “like cures like” – that is, a substance that would cause symptoms in a healthy person is used to cure those same symptoms in illness. For example, one remedy which might be used in a person suffering from insomnia is coffea, a remedy made from coffee.
Scientifically it can not yet be explained precisely how it works, but new theories in quantum physics are going some way towards shedding light on the process. What we do know is that a carefully selected homeopathic remedy acts as a trigger to the body’s healing processes.
Homoeopathy has been used in the UK for over two hundred years, but has an honourable tradition dating back to ancient Greece. It was Samuel Hahnemann, a brilliant doctor working in 1796 who developed the scientific and philosophical foundations of this gentler way of healing. These scientific principles form the basis of successful homeopathic practice today.
There are 5 NHS homeopathic hospitals in the UK alone.
March 2009: Complementary and Alternative Therapies Backed for NHS Funding
A major Government-funded study, carried out in Northern Ireland and commissiond by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety, found there would be a range of benefits to patients in providing access to complementary and alternative medicine, and that the treatments could even save the health service money.
Treatments administered after referral from local GPs included acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, osteopathy, reflexology and aromatherapy.
The Health Minister in Northern Ireland has made the independent evaluation report available to download on the Department’s website. As well as an extensive report with detailed responses from patients, GPs and practitioners, using a validated audit tool, focus groups and surveys, the report has made recommendations about the way forward. www.dhsspsni.gov.uk/index/hss/complementary-alternative-medicine.htm
Following the pilot, 80% of patients reported an improvement in their symptoms, 64% took less time off work and 55% reduced their use of painkillers.
In the pilot, 713 patients with a range of ages and demographic backgrounds and either physical or mental health conditions were referred to various complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies via nine GP practices in Belfast and Londonderry.
Homoeopathy received the highest percentage of reported improvements : In relation to treatment programme, patients who availed of chiropractic and osteopathy treatments (56%) were less likely to record an improvement in their level of wellbeing, compared with patients availing of acupuncture (77%) and homeopathic treatments (79%).
cIn 2005, the Bristol Homoeopathic Hospital carried out a published study on 6500 patients. 70% of them showed an improvement in health.
HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER A TREATMENT?
During the healing process we often find that out bodies let us know what we need to do in order to facilitate this. Helen will support you through this process, reading the signs according to the ‘Law of Cure’.
The Law of Cure helps to determine which direction the healing process of the body is heading. This phenomenon was discovered by the famous Doctor and Homoeopath, Dr Constantine Hering. He based his findings on a lifetime’s observation of the process involved when the sick patients became well.
He noted that as someone becomes well the following will be evident:
- Symptoms move from vital organs to less vital organs (less life threatening conditions)
- Cure moves from top to bottom, moving down the body
- Symptoms that have been suppressed in the past often resurface during the healing process and usually do so in reverse order of appearance e.g. if a patient with heart disease had been successfully treated with conventional medicine for a stomach ulcer before the heart condition, then the appearance of the stomach symptoms (less severe) would be evident before the patient was fully healed..
HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO I NEED?
Generally with Homoeopathic treatment you will only need to be seen for a monthly follow up after the initial session. How many times depends on how long the problem has been around. It takes on average
between 20-40% of the time of suffering to get better.
