Myofascial Cupping

WHAT IS IT?

Myofascial Cupping is a therapy that uses vacuums created in cups placed onto the body for holistic massage. This therapy is predominantly used to realign fascia which is the connective tissue that encloses and stabilise muscles and internal organs.

The placement of the cups targets and releases muscle tension and disperses blocked energy in order to promote the circulation of blood and Qi. This ancient way of relieving pain, restoring motion and balancing Qi is an extremely important method of improving health and well-being.

Cupping and Meridians:

There are twelve meridians (energy channels) which connect to our internal organs, along these meridians are acupoints. When particular acupoints are stimulated it will affect the organs, similar to shiatsu and acupuncture.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Cupping is done using cups that are specifically designed for a range of treatments. The reverse suction that is applied works to gently lift the bodies soft tissue, giving a gentle massage that stimulates blood circulation and aids in the draining of the lymph nodes. As a result, the tissues receive a fresh supply of oxygen and nutrients; and waste from the cells, and other harmful toxins, and substances are eliminated. Excess fluid is also drained and the muscles relax with the movement of the suction cups.

HISTORY

The Ebers Papyrus, written c. 1550 BC and one of the oldest medical textbooks in the Western world, describes the Egyptians’ use of cupping, while mentioning similar practices employed by Saharan peoples. In ancient Greece, Hippocrates (c. 400 BC) used cupping for internal disease and structural problems. Cupping is one of the oldest methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER A TREATMENT?

With the release of tension you will feel relaxed yet energised and much looser in your muscles. Temporary reddening of the tissue is common with this type of therapy. When a condition exists within a deeper muscle layer, discoloration will appear on the skin. The colour and pattern of the marks depend on the level of stagnation in the area and range from light red to dark purple, usually lasting 3 days to a week – these marks are not bruises, they are the result of having internal unwanted toxins pulled up to the skin. Techniques used in facial cupping does not produce any discolouration.

WHAT DO I DO AFTER A TREATMENT?

Cupping can be very detoxifying so drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and eat a simple supper.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO I NEED?

The number of treatments needed varies from person to person and every session is unique depending on your reasons for having treatment. It is advisable to begin with treatments in close succession (every 1-2 weeks) followed by maintenance treatments every 4-6 weeks.
